Max took the brunt of his brother's weight as he and Jay helped him from the bar to the restaurant, "Almost there, Little bro," he sang cheerfully, "just a little farther and we'll get you allll sobered up!" He glanced at Jaylene over his brother's head. She was awfully quiet. Usually she'd be lecturing Trent on his drinking habits. That confrontations he'd walked in one seemed to have affected her greatly. That or she was beyond words. Probably the first.
But Max wasn't one to show that he was capable of much serious thought. He would have the world think he didn't know the meaning of the word "serious," in fact. So his two companions didn't see the concern that would have flashed in his eyes. To them, he would seem unaffected by the whole situation.
They had finally reached the seafood restaurant. When they came to the door, the three of them stared at it for a few seconds, wondering how they were going to open it without dropping Trent. He caught Jaylene's eye, "Jay, I got him. How about you open it?" He flashed a charming smile that he knew would have no effect on Jay. She nodded and let go of Trent, holding her arms out for a breath to make sure that he didn't stumble before going to the door to hold it open. When they were inside, Max held up four fingers to the hostess and they followed her to their booth.
When the server came around to order their drinks, Max ordered a root beer, and Jaylene got sweet tea. He glanced at the menu, already knowing what he wanted. "So Trent...how goes it?"
