During the French and Indian war, a tribe of Indians (that were secretly a pack of lycans known as the Galivaldi) ran from Virginia to escape capture. They were going to travel south by boat. However, as they were boating, they got caught in a storm and were thrown off-course. They washed up on an island off the coast of North Carolina. They built their settlement there, naming the island after their pack.
After the American Revolution ended, other supernatural creatures moved to the island because it was much safer to take refuge on the island than to stay on the mainland. Around this time, humans were trying to find and settle on the island, because of legends of wealth and eternal youth. Some succeeded and were taken as slaves. Deciding that they didn't want the island to be overrun with humans, sorcerers inhabiting the island took it upon themselves to put up a barrier that would hide the island from outside eyes.
In the early 1900s, A group of humans escaped from the island and told others about the island and their treatment. The government got wind of this and, as a result, formed a secret government department that's name is currently unknown to the islanders. This department, at the time, wished no harm on the islanders, but instead kept watch over them, making sure that they posed no threat to the United States or any other human being. Both sides thought this was fair and practical. Due to this chain of events, human slavery ended.
